Opening Mega Session
with Mike Abrashoff

Former Navy Commander and Author of It's Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy

Fri., March 7 | 10:15-11:45 a.m.
Omni Hotel Dallas Ballroom

An inspiring story of innovative leadership and organizational transformation, Mike Abrashoff’s first book, It’s Your Ship, has been heralded by Fast Company and the Harvard Business Review. When Abrashoff took command of the USS Benfold, the ship’s performance ranked at rock-bottom. Determined to improve performance, but without the power to hire, fire, or promote personnel, Abrashoff focused on what he could change—the ship’s culture. His innovative approach broke from the traditional command-and-control leadership style, creating a guiding set of principles he calls Grassroots Leadership. When crew members asked Abrashoff to solve a problem, his response became, “It’s your ship, what would you do?” The result was an empowered and engaged team that turned the ship into the Navy’s top performer.

People at every level in business relate to Abrashoff’s dilemma—being held accountable for results without having the ability to make the rules. His results-oriented approach can help you lead significant change in your store while working within the administrative system of your college.

Sat., March 8 | 10:15-11:45 a.m.
Omni Hotel Dallas Ballroom

As “a visionary thinker with a rare intellect,” Sinek teaches leaders and organizations how to inspire people. A trained ethnographer and author, Sinek has held a life-long curiosity for why people and organizations do the things they do. Fascinated by the leaders and companies that make the greatest impact in the world, he has discovered some remarkable patterns of how they think, act, and communicate.

Sharing his findings, Sinek will explain how campus stores can use his Golden Circle concept—defining the purpose, cause, or belief, that drives every one of us—to motivate staff and enhance creativity and innovation. He will also discuss ways to create a culture in which people work as they were designed—together—in a community of inspiration, trust, and common purpose. Timely and relevant, these topics makes this mega a must see!
